Discover Saint-Côme for a few days this summer

July 14, 2023

Known as a canoeing and hiking paradise, Saint-Côme is a must-see destination for outdoor enthusiasts. In winter, the alpine ski mountain is the hub of the surrounding area, but in summer, Saint-Côme is the place to be to discover its trails and summer activities. You'll pass through a charming village where people are welcoming and proud of their hometown.

Here's our suggested itinerary to discover the Saint-Côme area for a few days.

DAY 1

For your first day in the Saint-Côme area, don't miss the opportunity to canoe down the Rivière L'Assomption at Canot Volant. A local fixture, this company has been offering canoeing and kayaking activities for the whole family for nearly 20 years. You can choose a guided descent of the river, or do it on your own. Different lengths of descent are offered on site, so there's plenty of time to spend with family and friends.

We continue this first day of outdoor activities in the Saint-Côme area with a visit to the Parc régional de la Chute-à-Bull. Taking the first trail, we soon arrive at the foot of an impressive 18-metre-high waterfall. Another trail leads to a mountain-top hut with a breathtaking view of the local mountains. In addition to the hiking trails, a canyoning activity has been offered since last summer. This new activity invites the most courageous to abseil directly into the waterfall using specialized equipment.

DAY 2

Mountain bikers will be delighted to find mountain biking trails in the heart of the village of Saint-Côme, in the Parc Louis-Philippe-De Grandpré. A total of 31 mountain bike trails totalling 18 km have been developed by the municipality. Cyclists of all levels will find a challenge to match.

For visitors in search of new discoveries, the day continues at the Maison du bonheur, a boutique-café featuring products made from forest plants. Forest products feature prominently on the menu, including balsam fir caramel cake, boreal-scented café latté and sea buckthorn lemonade. Epicureans will be delighted to discover so many flavors.

In the neighboring village, you'll come across Bonsaï Gros-Bec, Quebec's only bonsai interpretation center. Learn more about this art form by contemplating their extensive bonsai collection. In a zen-like atmosphere, visitors consult interpretation panels and attend demonstrations. The tour is self-guided, at the visitor's own pace.

The day ends with a beer at the Trécarrée microbrewery. Discover their line of forest beers!

DAY 3

Saint-Côme is home to one of the three entrances to Parc national du Mont-Tremblant. It's a little-known fact, but two-thirds of this major park is in the Lanaudière region. Here, you can take a stroll to Lac des Cyprès or Lac de l'Assomption, and hike the Grandes-Vallées trail, a 4.6 km round-trip to a lookout point. There are well-equipped campgrounds and ready-to-camp facilities.

Not far away, the Parc régional de la Forêt Ouareau is one of Lanaudière's largest regional parks. Comprising the municipalities of Chertsey, Notre-Dame-de-la-Merci, Entrelacs and Saint-Côme, this park covers over 150 km2. Five sectors provide access to the park for hiking, canoeing, paddleboarding, hebertism and cycling. There are also two climbing areas: the Murmures trail (Pont-Suspendu sector) and Lac du Castor and Lac Blanc (Contreforts sector).

Whether you choose the Ouareau forest or Parc national du Mont-Tremblant for this final day, outdoor enthusiasts are sure to be delighted with their time spent in the Saint-Côme area over the next few days.
