Discover Repentigny this summer: a few days' itinerary

April 03, 2024

Just a few kilometers from Montreal, Repentigny, the most urban of the small suburbs, invites you to discover its surroundings. On the banks of the St. Lawrence and L'Assomption rivers, it's the perfect place to soak up culture and sunshine. Culture, the great outdoors and history share the stage in this urban destination that's well worth the detour.

Here's an itinerary to discover the urban destination of Repentigny, well worth a few days' stopover this summer.

DAY 1

On your first day of summer in Repentigny, you'll want to stop at the Espace culturel, right in the center of town. On one side is the Théâtre Alphonse-Desjardins and on the other the Centre d'art Diane-Dufresne. These cultural institutions are surrounded by the allée des Artistes, the allée de la Création and the passage de l'Imaginaire. With such creative and inspiring street names, you'll feel right at home at Place des Arts. This summer, the Centre d'art Diane-Dufresne is presenting two exhibitions until September 29th: Paradis perdu, the first solo show of the artist Catherine Hélie-Harvey, who uses drawing to glorify the multiple figures of women, and Maison de campagne, where you can discover the colorful universe of the artist Mephisto Bates, who was born in Lanaudière.

After a tour of the exhibits, visitors are invited to stroll through the Espace culturel and enjoy the relaxation areas that have been laid out on site. Thematic gardens featuring various sculptures lead to the Church of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the oldest church in the Montreal diocese. Take a historical stroll along the Promenade du temps Memoria. Nearby, the forecourt of the Théâtre Alphonse-Desjardins hosts the Boîte à musique Desjardins series of outdoor shows. A rich and varied program is offered all summer long. If you continue strolling, you'll come across a number of restaurants and lively terraces on the city's main thoroughfare, Notre-Dame Street.

DAY 2

Because one day isn't enough to see everything downtown Repentigny has to offer, we've decided to come back and enjoy the green spaces along the river. Parc de l'Île-Lebel is a veritable oasis in the heart of the city. Set on the banks of the St. Lawrence River, this haven of peace offers 3 km of walking trails. Many people come here to observe a wide variety of birds and ducks. It's the perfect place for a picnic. There's also a park with children's play modules right next to the entrance.

A little further along Notre-Dame Street, you come across Parc Saint-Laurent. This urban beach invites you to relax with its sandy areas, loungers and parasols. Mist-makers are available for cooling off, although swimming is prohibited.

In fact, the Heritage Cruise on the St. Lawrence River departs from this very beach. Board the shuttle with a certified guide and learn more about the history of the town of Repentigny, the resort era, the surrounding islands and the main attractions in the area.

DAY 3

The Chemin du Roy, the historic tourist route through the Lanaudière region linking Quebec City to Montreal, passes through Repentigny via its main thoroughfare, Rue Notre-Dame. History and heritage sites such as mills and churches can be found along this route, which visitors in search of history will enjoy taking. Cyclists will love riding the Chemin du Roy along the river, or they may prefer to take the urban bike circuit, which visits the surrounding area over some sixty kilometers, starting in Repentigny. It's a great way to round off your visit to the Repentigny area and appreciate the rich history and culture of this urban destination.
