HIGH-CALIBRE, DIVERSE PROGRAMMING
This year's opening concert on July 5 features Payare and the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. In his famous secular cantata Carmina Burana, Carl Orff calls on powerful, exalted forces to illustrate what he himself called the “great theater of the world”: the ups and downs of existence, its fragility, the joy of living in harmony with nature and earthly pleasures. This grippingly intense fresco is brought to life by an imposing chorus and orchestra, accompanied by three exceptional soloists. Rachmaninov's spellbinding virtuosity and Lera Auerbach's mythological universe add to this grandiose tableau, for an evening at the crossroads of eras and emotions.
On July 19, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin presents Constellation Akamus + Mendelssonhn II: The Prophet Elijah, two masterpieces performed exclusively in North America, with the young singers of the Audi Jugendchorakademie and a line-up of world-class soloists.
One of the most eagerly awaited moments of the festival takes place on July 27, when Yuja Wang performs with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Orchestre Symphonique Métropolitain.
Yannick and the Orchestre Métropolitain will also close the festival with Tristan and Isolde, a great love poem driven by a passion as intense as it is tragic. Inspired by a medieval legend, this work blends desire and death in music that has turned the world of opera upside down.
Church concerts include Beethoven with Alisa Weilerstein and Inon Barnatan, Dmitri Shostakovich played by Yulianna Avdeeva, winner of the 2010 Chopin Prize, and a harpsichord symphony played by William Christie and Justin Taylor.
The Hors les murs series will also take us to the Distillerie Grand Dérangement for the Duo CC lyrical guitar show, and to Place Bourget for La Traverse Miraculeuse, a tribute to the Festival Mémoire et Racines.
