We tested the Chute-à-Bull cave: a unique adventure in Lanaudière

July 16, 2025

With the help of an experienced guide, you can enter this unique underground world and immerse yourself in the region's subterranean history, in an activity that's both educational and exhilarating.

We tried it out (because, you know, we like to know what we're talking about!) and we'll tell you all about it...or almost all!

We arrived at the Parc régional de la Chute-à-Bull on a hot summer's day, and once we were there, it was super-easy to find our way around. The reception desk is well signposted, parking is ample, and it's accessible and clear for everyone. Rates for the cavern activity are $25 for adults and $15 for children aged 6 to 18, and include access to the park. Important note: it's best to book online in advance, directly on the Société de développement des Parcs régionaux de la Matawinie website. It's fast, convenient and ensures you have the number of places you need.

CHALLENGING APPROACH TRAILS

The adventure begins even before you reach the cave: a 2.5 km trail with a vertical drop of around 100 m. It's a great hike to discover. Before or after your underground visit, you can stretch your legs on the 6 km of well-marked trails. There's something for everyone: a short, easy trail to the belvedere, covered bridges to cross, and impressive views of the famous 18-metre-high waterfall. It's also a good place to observe the Rivière de la Boule and delve into the history of the log drive, when lumberjacks drove tree trunks directly into the river. In short, it's a walk full of discoveries!

A GEOLOGICAL GEM IN THE HEART OF MATAWINIE

Open since summer 2024, the Chute-à-Bull cavern is a new addition to the regional park of the same name. It is the only underground bat habitat open to the public in the entire region. Once past the lookout, we pick up our helmets and headlamps, because no, you don't need professional equipment. The cavern has been designed to welcome the general public, accompanied by expert guides. At the heart of the cave lives a small community of bats. The guide will tell you all about their vital and legitimate role in the local ecosystem. A unique opportunity to change your view of these fascinating nocturnal mammals.

It takes about 1 hour of guided tour to explore the galleries and learn more about the fascinating bats that live there from October until the cave reopens in May. What's more, every Saturday in September, two guided evening tours are offered to give you a different, more mysterious and hushed experience of the cavern.

A perfect activity for the adrenalin-seeking curious, or for those looking for some great end-of-day photos!

OUR IMPRESSIONS

We really enjoyed our experience, from the guide who gave us lots of information about the formation of the cave and the bats, to the accessibility of the activity. You don't need to know anything about caving or have any particular physical skills to enjoy the visit. If you're the kind of person who feels a little cramped in tight spaces, the guide is there to make you feel at ease.

The hike really adds to the experience, and we recommend that you take the time to admire the falls, the viewpoints, and even bring your own picnic to enjoy on the spot - there are plenty of tables all along the trails.
