The Mont-Ouareau summit

Mont-Ouareau offers a wide variety of terrain within just a few kilometers. From the parking lot on Route 125, the National Trail enters the forest and quickly gains elevation. The climb is steep in places and has a total elevation gain of about 360 m, which explains why the trail is rated as moderately difficult despite its short distance.

As you approach the summit, located at an elevation of nearly 700 m, openings in the forest gradually reveal the landscape. Lake Ouareau dominates the view to the east, while other vantage points offer glimpses of Lake Bouillon, Lake des Îles, and the mountains surrounding Saint-Donat.

Once you reach the summit, don’t turn back too quickly. A short loop trail marked in white and blue takes you to the various viewpoints before rejoining the National Trail for the descent.

This hike in Lanaudière is particularly well-suited if you’re looking for a real mountain climb without spending the entire day walking. If you’d prefer a longer hike, the Mont-Ouareau Trail continues well beyond the summit toward Lake Lemieux and the Lake Archambault area.

Access to the trail:

The most direct trailhead to the summit is located along Route 125, between Notre-Dame-de-la-Merci and Saint-Donat, about 8 km north of Notre-Dame-de-la-Merci. The parking lot designated for hikers is located near coordinates 46.2521, -74.1284 and can accommodate about 50 vehicles. Parking is metered, while access to the National Trail is free. Be sure to use the trailhead on Route 125 if your goal is the summit, since the Mont-Ouareau Trail also has access points on the Saint-Donat side.
