The Sentier des Contreforts lives up to its name. This 27.3 km section of the National Trail winds through the mountainous terrain between Notre-Dame-de-la-Merci and Saint-Côme, in an area where ascents and descents follow one another almost constantly.
The route passes through various forest habitats before reaching ridges and cliffs that offer views of the Matawinie Mountains. Near Notre-Dame-de-la-Merci, the trail runs alongside the Lac Blanc area and crosses several small lakes. Further east, the higher elevations provide views of the valley, Mont Tranchant, and Lac Clair.
The full traverse is intended for experienced hikers and requires careful planning. But the 27.3 km isn’t mandatory. For a hike lasting a few hours, you can start on the same trail from one of its access points, hike as far as you’d like, and simply retrace your steps. It’s a great way to experience the character of the Contreforts without planning a long, linear hike.
No matter which distance you choose, expect a true mountain trail, with varied terrain, some steeper sections, and plenty of opportunities to gain elevation.
Trail Access:
To explore the Sentier des Contreforts from the west, use the access point on Route 347 in Notre-Dame-de-la-Merci, at coordinates 46.26684, -73.97990. This starting point is convenient both for beginning the traverse and for a shorter round-trip hike. To the east, the trail is accessible via Chemin du Lac Clair in Saint-Côme, at the parking lot for the Montagne du Tranchant climbing wall, near the coordinates 46.289835, -73.855316. Another access point is available in the Val Saint-Côme area. Check the official map before choosing your starting point.
